Cake Mate Easy Squeeze Decorating Icing

We had a birthday here recently, and I decided to try my hand at making the cake myself. I've never really experimented with baking much, especially things like cakes and cookies and the like, so I stuck with a boxed strawberry cake mix for the cake part.

The icing and frosting is where it got really fun. I made a cream cheese frosting by creaming together about 1/4 cup butter and 1 8oz package of softened cream cheese, added 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract, then slowly mixed in 1 cup confectioner's sugar. It was really simple and easy, and tasted great.

Since the party was in a Hello Kitty theme, namely pink explosion, I decided to get some pink icing to try my hand at decorating my cake. I've never tried it before, and was pretty nervous. I picked up a bottle of Cake Mate Pink Easy Squeeze icing and hoped for the best.

I baked my cake, frosted it, and then had to run back to the store to try and find decorating tips. I had assumed it would come with at least the design so I could write on the cake, however it did not. After finding the tips and finally getting down to icing the cake it was a hassle to squeeze the icing out of the container and the writing really suffered for it. Also, after the icing had set on the cake it didn't stay connected to the frosting and would fall off the cake or split away from itself for a small design I did on the edge of the cake.

All in all I would give the product a mediocre rating, but might pick it up again to try just in case the problems with the use of icing was related to my first try and not the actual product.
